Error Correction

 

Chapter Significance: 

Error correction is very important. This topic is very common in the English section in almost every competitive examination. This topic has special weightage in Banking and SSC examinations. To attempt questions from this topic, one must know all the grammatical rules which we have discussed in the other chapters.

 

For better understanding, go through the following chapters-

Noun, Pronoun, Adjectives, Adverbs, Verb, Prepositions, Sentence and Clauses, Modals, Question Tags, Tenses, Narration, Voice Change.

 

Examples:

Read the sentences to find out whether there is an error in it. The error if any, will be in one part of the sentences. The number corresponding to that part will be your answer. If the given sentence is correct as it is, then mark the answer as ‘No error’

 

1. Rina lost her (a)/ luggages at the airport (b)/ while returning home (c) /from Dubai yesterday. (d) / No error (e)

 

Answer: (b)

‘s’/ ‘es’ should not be added with certain nouns to make it plural. ‘luggage’ is correct, ‘luggages’ is wrong.

2. The commission has issued (a) / order for the (b) /transfer of Mahesh (c) /to the Health Department. (d)/ No error (e)

 

Answer: (b)

‘orders’ is correct. ‘Orders’ is used for formal command.

 

3. Basic knowledge of computer are (a)/ very much essential (b)/ for everyone to survive (c)/ in the competitive world. (d) No error (e)

 

Answer: (a)

In part (a) the subject is singular ‘basic knowledge’ and therefore the singular verb ‘is’ should be used in place of ‘are’.

 

4. I have always got (a) /my friend, Jay, (b) /besides me in (c)/my difficult phases of life. (d)/ No error (e)

 

Answer: (c)

‘beside’ – next, by the side of

‘besides’ – moreover

No preposition is put before ‘home’.

‘not’ can not be put after ‘forbid’

For countable nouns, ‘the’ is put after ‘both’ when the latter is used as an adjective.

‘so’ is not used in the principle adverbial clause of reason.

Singular verb is used with ‘more than one’ and hence ‘has’ should be used instead ‘have’

Answer: (c)

Third person singular verb is used when ‘neither’ is used as an adjective.

‘Neither of my sisters has’ is correct.

 

Exercise: Read the sentences to find out whether there is an error in them. The error if any, will be in one part of the sentences. The number corresponding to that part will be your answer. If the given sentence is correct as it is, then marks the answer as ‘No error’.

‘many’ is used for the countable noun. Book – countable noun.

Answer: (b)

Spectacles -plural 

Hence plural verb ‘have been’ will be used.
