Conversion to Canonical Form

Example 1:

Now find the corresponding canonical SOP.

Solution:

Convert to canonical SOP:

Add ‘B’ variable in which term B is missing.

Now it is canonical SOP because all variables are present in each term.

Example 2:

Consider a SOP, Y= A + BC.

Find number of minterms in canonical SOP of this term.

Solutions:

Given expression Y= A + BC is not canonical SOP because in first term variable B and ‘C’ is missing and in second term variable  ‘A’ is missing

Convert to canonical SOP:

This is canonical SOP because all variables are present in each term. So, number of minterm is 5.

Then rest of the term is canonical POS like

Now how we will get direct canonical POS from SOP Y= A + BC.

We can direct calculate the POS form the expression

Here C missing at first term and  B is missing at second term at canonical POS.

This above expression is canonical POS term.
